4140 Ordnance Steel, DBM System for Short-Action AICS Magazines
This is quite simply the toughest 'bottom metal' to replace your factory plastic available anywhere - nothing else comes close. We have used the best materials, machining and finishing methods available and cut out a decent amount of weight in the design along the way.
Our Tikka T3 short action DBMs are made from the same high-grade steels that we use for our Remington 700 units. They are available in either 316 stainless steel (passivated) or 4140 ordnance steel (QPQ nitrided). Both variants are CNC machined from the one block of solid billet, with the inside corners of the magazine-well EDM wire cut. The unit is then skeletonized for maximum weight reduction, following by polishing to remove all tooling marks then a glass bead blast to a satin finish. At this point the stainless unit is passivated for the ultimate in corrosion resistance, whilst the 4140 cromoly variant is QPQ nitrided resulting in an extremely high surface hardness (59 to 60 Rc) and a nice matte black color.
This DBM accepts high quality, higher capacity and commonly available AICS-pattern steel magazines from a number of different magazine manufacturers, from both here in the US as well as the UK. No modifications to the rifle are required to fit this system although very minimal stock work is required (see information below under "fitting" for more details). We have included a positive locking, magazine retention system (like the original factory unit), which can easily be removed if desired for range shooting but is useful in preventing accidental mag releases during hunting when out in the bush and scrub. Our low profile magazine release lever is also CNC machined from the same steels as the main unit and is serrated and chamfered for positive thumb grip when releasing magazines.
Features and Inclusions:
Completely CNC machined from the one large block of 4140 ordnance-grade steel with the magwell EDM wire cut.
Post-machining glass bead blasting and polishing to remove all tooling marks
The whole unit has then been QPQ nitrided to 60 Rockwell hardness, resulting in a matte black color (suits blued rifles perfectly)
Lightening cuts made to reduce excess weight.
Magazine retention spring system for hunters to prevent the box magazines from dropping free when release lever accidentally snags (can be easily removed with an allan key).
Very ergonomic magazine release lever with serrations which has been tucked out of the way to minimize snagging when hunting with serrations for positive grip.
Whole DBM is completely chamfered to eliminate sharp edges everywhere.
The package comes with a comprehensive bedding kit as pictured in the first two photos. This includes a CNC machined grade-5 titanium recoil lug and 304 grade stainless steel pillars and hex-head action screws.
The package comes with spare parts (lever pins, lever springs).
Our DBM follows the factory inlet 100% however due to the AICS magazines being larger, a step inside the stock needs to be ground down. This is an easy 10 minute job with a dremel-type tool or a little longer with a rasp. No special tools are needed and this area is not visible once the rifle is reassembled.
